Determining the correct location of gas meters is an often-overlooked step. Gas meter specifications and requirements, while not as seemingly daunting as other utilities, can become a hindrance if not planned for in advance.
Meter set assemble requirements (as shown in the exhibit) encompass the meter, riser, fittings, etc., and should follow their municipalities’ gas provider specifications.
SoCalGas (“SCG”) states gas meters should not be:
- In the heater, engine, or electric meter rooms
- In living quarters, under interior stairways, or under outside fire escapes
- Installed behind solid walls, fences, or gates where access cannot be made by SCG
When following SCG requirements, meters must be protected from vehicular damage. Furthermore, any source of ignition must be located more than three radial feet and only fixed non-opening windows can be installed within 18 inches from either side of the regulator vent point of termination. Additionally, a 36-inch unobstructed, flat, and level working space in front of the meter set assembly is required and must be maintained. We recommend keeping a copy of the included spec sheet handy when planning for future gas meter locations with SoCalGas.
