LEED Certification is one of the most sought after credentials in the green building industry by employers. In fact, according to a new study by Burning Glass Technologies, the demand for LEED Green Associates and LEED APs has grown 46% in a year.. Here are 5 ways for you to prepare for LEED Certification!
1. Decide Which Credential Exam you are Taking & Educate Yourself about the Credential
There are several credentials you can earn based on your professional goals in the green building industry. One of the best resources by far is the USGBC site (the creator of LEED). Another resources are those prepared by their recognized Education Partners like GBRI, GBES, GreenCE, and Ever Blue. Make sure to download the candidate handbook to understand eligibility requirements, registration, and scheduling details.
2. Decide Whether You Would Want to Study on Your Own or Sign up for an Exam Prep Course
While, studying on your own could be challenging given the amount of material covered on the exam, with the right amount of discipline it is definitely possible. However, there are plenty of paid exam-prep providers you can find online by searching on Google. Make sure they are approved by USGBC or are USGBC Education Partners. Doing so will guarantee that the quality of your education is on point.
3. Choose Your Preparation Delivery Method & Identify an Exam Prep Provider.
Depending on your availability, schedule, and learning method, there are live online classes, on-demand only access, and in-person courses. Make a selection that is right for you and your situation.
Because the new LEED v4 test was released in 2015, make sure any exam prep program you select has up-to-date material. Here is a list of things an ideal exam prep program will include:
- Narrated study materials/tutorial with option to download audio files
- Study guide that you can print
- Flash cards to memorize important things
- Section or category quizzes (look for quizzes with answer explanations)
- Simulated mock exams (at least two)
4. Study-Study-Study
Think back to those cram sessions in college, and strategize how to avoid recreating those coffee crazed nights.
Study in a group or with a partner if that is something that works with your situation. Finding someone to study with for your exam has several benefits, like being able to quiz each other, and hold each other accountable to a study schedule. Some exam prep providers also provide group discounts, making it easier for your colleagues to join you in the pursuit of a credential.
5. Take Mock Exams
Make sure you are completely prepared leading up to your LEED exam by using a trusted provider’s mock exams. This is your best gauge to ensure you will successfully pass the exam on your first try. This also gives you a targeted way to complete your studies and preparations, based on the areas you find you are most lacking in during the mock exams. Once you successfully pass the mock exams you can feel confident going into the real thing.
