The California State Legislature recently passed AB 1701 with bipartisan support… a new measure that could have devastating and significant financial impacts on the housing industry.
Assembly Bill 1701 by Assembly-member Tony Thurmond is a severely flawed proposal that would drive up project costs and unfairly punish innocent home-building companies.
A major threat to our industry and housing affordability, AB 1701:
- Rewards Bad Actors – Fails to hold unscrupulous contractors accountable for not paying their own employees and shifts liability to innocent parties that have already made payments meant for the workers of those contractors.
- Drives Up Housing Costs – A flawed plan that hurts people who are already struggling with affordability or living paycheck to paycheck by making housing more expensive.
We all agree that workers deserve their pay, but AB 1701 is not the solution. It shifts liability to innocent home-building companies and threatens their viability to remain in business.
Since the Assembly Bill 1701 has been passed by the California State Legislature it is in Governor Jerry Brown’s hands now. There are 2 ways we can still help stop AB 1701:
