Project Summary
The Pacifica San Juan residential development is located in the rolling hills of the coastal community of San Juan Capistrano, CA. The roundabout served as the main on and off ramp access from the I-5 freeway, and replaced a dangerous and unsightly 5-legged stop controlled intersection. The improvement was the first roundabout that Caltrans District 12 has been involved with, and they are looking to roundabouts for future intersections as their traffic handling capability and safety statistics outweigh typical 4-way signalized intersections.
The scope of work included: The total reconstruction of the existing intersection; roadway realignment and slope reduction; installation of 8” sewer line and manholes, demolition of a hazardous 10” asbestos cement water line and replacement with a new 12” C900 water line, storm drain pipe and drainage structures; excavation / grading and building a new 4.2-foot street section, asphalt and decorative concrete paving; cast in place retaining wall and all new landscaping.
